In addition to being attorneys, mediators, arbitrators and guardians ad litem, both Jennifer D. Patterson and Tracy Ann Moore-Grant are trained Parent Coordinators with our firm.
What is Parent Coordination?
Parent coordination is a child-focused alternative dispute resolution process in which a mental health or legal professional with mediation training and experience assists parents with any of all of the following tasks:
-develop a parenting plan during the divorce or modification process that works for their family;
-implement their parenting plan by facilitating the resolution of any disputes in a timely manner by focusing resolutions on children’s needs;
-and with prior approval of the parties and/or the court, makes decisions within the scope of the court order or appointment contract;
-works with the parties after a final order to monitor compliance with a court order and resolve any disputes.
Although parents can utilize Parent Coordination at any time before, during or after a litigation, PC is currently the only process whereby parties receive assistance and are held accountable once litigation is over. Benefits of PC include using the process to resolve conflicts regarding the parenting plan in a timely manner, prevent litigation, and to protect and sustain safe, healthy and meaningful parent-child relationships. Parent coordination is a quasi-legal, non-confidential alternative dispute resolution (ADR) process that combines education, case management, monitoring, conflict management and sometimes divests the Parent Coordinator with decision-making functions.
Parent Coordination is a flexible process that can be undertaken voluntarily or by Court Order. The goals, duration and overall process is individually designed to address the needs unique to each family. The process can include, as determined by the PC, work with children as well as step-parents or other key individuals to the situation.
